Five Shockers garner American regular-season accolades; Kaminska Newcomer Pitcher of the Year

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Five Wichita State University baseball student-athletes garnered American Athletic Conference regular-season accolades, it was announced by the conference office Monday, May 24.

Freshman Jace Kaminska was voted the conference’s Newcomer Pitcher of the Year and All-Conference First Team, while sophomore pitcher Aaron Haase, junior first baseman Garrett Kocis, junior third baseman Paxton Wallace and senior outfielder Corrigan Bartlett joined Kaminska on the All-Conference First Team.

The five student-athletes recognized marks a program record since the Shockers joined The American prior to the 2018 season. All five Shockers are first-time all-conference honorees.A right-hander from Caney, Kan., Kaminska leads WSU, ranks third in the AAC and is tops among conference freshmen pitchers with a 2.52 ERA in 11 appearances and nine starts this season. He is 7-1 on the mound and has thrown a conference-best two complete games while only allowing 15 earned runs on 48 hits with 45 strikeouts and just 18 walks in 53 2/3 innings.

Haase, a right-hander who hails from Amarillo, Texas, leads the American Athletic Conference and ranks in the top-25 nationally with eight saves. In 17 appearances in 2021, he is 2-1 with a 1.09 ERA and has surrendered only three earned runs on 12 hits with 24 strikeouts and just two walks in 24 2/3 innings of work.

A native of Omaha, Neb., Garrett Kocis leads the Shockers and is tied for fourth in The American with 12 home runs in 33 games. Through the regular season, he is hitting .298 with 37 hits, 31 runs scored, 10 doubles, one triple, 12 homers, 44 RBI, a team-best .685 slugging percentage, 13 walks and a .364 on-base percentage. Kocis has homered twice in three games in 2021.

Wallace, who hails from Greenbrier, Ark., is second on the team with a .328 batting average and has compiled 65 hits in 51 games with 43 runs scored, 11 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, a team-high 47 RBI, a .545 slugging percentage, 20 walks, a .388 on-base percentage and five stolen bases. His 47 RBI is tied with his teammate and fellow all-conference selection Corrigan Bartlett for second in the American Athletic Conference. Wallace has homered two times in three games this season.

A native of Maize, Kan., Bartlett leads Wichita State with a .342 batting average in 51 games this season. He has tallied 65 hits, including nine doubles, one triple and six homers, going along with a team-best 47 RBI. In addition, Bartlett has posted 40 runs scored, 16 walks, a team and American Athletic Conference-best seven sacrifice flies, and seven stolen bases through the regular season. His seven sac flies rank sixth in all of NCAA Division I Baseball.

Wichita State (30-21, 18-13 American) is the three seed in the American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship and will play six seed South Florida in the tournament’s opening round Tuesday, May 25, at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 47 minutes after the conclusion of the No. 2 seed vs. No. 7 seed contest, which begins at 3 p.m. CT (4 p.m. ET).
