Campers getting early start to Memorial Day Weekend not deterred by recent storms
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The unofficial start to summer comes this weekend, capped by Memorial Day on Monday. The forecast calls for the start of the weekend to stay clear before storm chances return Sunday night into Monday. Some campers at El Dorado Lake were among those getting an early start to their summer, making the most out of their time and riding out a couple of stormy nights.
“We had a friend here too who was camping (Wednesday) night in a tent and her tent stakes blew over and she got all wet. So she finally got in her car because it was so windy,” said Rosie Epp, among those camping at El Dorado Lake.
Ahead of the weekend, El Dorado State Park Ranger Ranger Justin Lauppe said the park’s utility camp grounds are full. Permanent campsites are available, but they are going quickly, Lauppe said.
“That’s fairly common for a holiday weekend with us out here in El Dorado,” Lauppe said.
Those gathered at the lake said even with the recent unfavorable weather, they’re enjoying their opportunity to kick off the summer after a challenging, unusual schoolyear.
“It’s been difficult. It’s been a lot of changes and just trying to adapt,” camper John Nugent said. “I think I’m ready for a life without technology for a little bit.”
