Man arrested for DUI in crash that killed woman near downtown Wichita
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Update: Police arrested 33-year-old Scott Cabrales on charges of aggravated battery, driving under the influence, and no proof of insurance in connection with the crash that killed 80-year-old Frankie Baxter of Wichita.
Around 4:20 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to an injury accident with a driver pinned at Maple and Martinson. They arrived to find Baxter pinned inside her vehicle. She was removed from the vehicle with the assistance of the Wichita Fire Department and pronounced deceased on the scene.
The investigation revealed that Baxter was driving a blue 2015 Hyundai Tucson northbound on Elizabeth. She turned to go eastbound on Maple. Cabrales was driving a gold 2008 Mazda Six eastbound on Maple at a high rate of speed and believed to be under the influence of alcohol. Cabrales struck the rear driver’s side of the Hyundai, causing the vehicle to strike the curb and a tree.
Cabrales was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment of minor injuries and then booked into jail. The investigation is ongoing, and the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

An 80-year-old woman is dead after a Monday afternoon crash near downtown Wichita. The two-vehicle crash happened about 4:15 p.m. near Maple and Elizabeth, east of Friends University.
Wichita Police Lt. Joe Kennedy said the woman died at the scene. At the scene, police said it’s believed that a second vehicle hit the woman’s car from behind, causing it to spin out and hit a tree.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area as investigators remained on the scene.
