WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Storm season is just getting started, and there are ways you can prepare your family for it.

Personal protection expert Joe Schillaci said everyone should have supplies packed in their vehicles to be prepared for anything.

Some items he recommends are:

  • A flashlight
  • A blanket
  • Non-perishable foods
  • First Aid kit
  • Cash
  • Lighter
  • Compass

Schillaci also recommended making sure your gas tank was filled and having important documents ready to go in case you have to leave the home quickly.

“We don’t plan to fail, we fail to plan, and for any reason, no matter what we are going to do, going to socialize, going to the beach, going on a hike.. whatever we’re gonna do, it is always good to have a plan. It just takes a couple seconds to instill in your brain.”

If you have a pet, Janell Jessup with the Butler County Response Team said you should also have items for your pets ready to go.

Those items include:

  • 2-3 day’s worth of food
  • Extra bowls
  • Extra water, stored separately
  • Extra leash and collar
  • Pet information and vet sheet, emergency contact
  • Mini First Aid kit for pet

If you pack a pet information sheet, it should include and emergency contact, vet information, food allergies, medications, and if they get along with other pets and animals. The sheet should also include a picture of you and your pet.

“That way if you do have to check your pet into an emergency shelter we can identify who the pet and owner match up to, and keep it in a plastic bag in your go bag,” Jessup said.
