WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Textron Aviation is one of 34 companies employing teens through the Youth Employment Project this summer.

Currently, 422 teens are employed through YEP, which is organized by the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas.

“You not only have Textron, and you not only have Spirit, you have other great companies around that participate in our program, in one way or another. Cox Machine is one,” said Keith Lawing, president of the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas.

He added, “Young people today don’t know everything you could do within the aviation industry, so this summer internship is an opportunity to expose young people.”

More than 300 students from across the region applied for the program through Textron Aviation. Nearly 100 students were chosen for the program and will work 20 hours per week during the six-week paid internship.

“The goal of this program is to provide these students with experience and exposure to the various career opportunities within aviation and advanced manufacturing. The goal is to show them the vast variety of opportunities here with us,” said Michele Gifford, workforce planning director for Textron Aviation.

Textron Aviation also accepted 230 college interns this summer.

In 2018, Textron Aviation chose 25 students for the YEP.

“Programs like these are everything to me. I feel like the youth in this community quite literally need this chance. They need this opportunity and they need this time to really grow and flourish and thrive into the productive citizens that they deserve to be and they want to be,” said Christopher Burrell, YEP participant in 2018.

Textron Aviation is hiring for 330 open full-time positions in Wichita. You can apply by clicking here.
