WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Juneteenth (June 19), also known as Emancipation Day, is a holiday that celebrates the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. A series of events will be held throughout the month of June in Wichita to empower the community and uphold the memory of the holiday.

Friday, June 11, 2021

  • 7 p.m. - Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Competition: WSU Rhatigan Student Center, Beggs Ballroom - Doors open at 6 p.m., Show starts at 7 p.m. You must have a ticket to attend.

Saturday, June 12, 2021

  • 10-11:30 a.m. - Books & Breakfast ICT JuneteenthICT Edition at St. Paul AME Church, 1756 N Piatt Ave. Drive-up only. Breakfast will be first come first serve.
  • 6 p.m. - Elevate Premiere, a Create Campaign program on Facebook. Create Campaign is releasing the first in a series of shows highlighting diverse business owners throughout the city of Wichita.

  • Miss Juneteenth (3 p.m. & 6 p.m.): The Lux, 120 E. 1st St. N., Tickets Available here. You must have a ticket to attend. Miss Juneteenth is a film about a former Miss Juneteenth titleholder turned single mother who is determined to turn around her life in spite of her circumstances.

  • CORE Garden Block Party: Cultivating and Celebrating Food Sovereignty (5-7 p.m.): Robin Rounds Memorial Garden located at 1121 N Green St. Enjoy food, music, and learn more about the CORE gardens of Wichita and other community gardens and food programming opportunities.

  • TKAAM Thursday: The Wichita Monrovians, Colored Western League (Noon - 1 p.m.): On the TKAAM Facebook page. The Kansas African American Museum will feature John E. Dreifort, PhD, baseball expert and Wichita State University History Professor. He will discuss the Wichita Monrovians baseball team and its big games, including the day they played Wichita’s Ku Klux Klan #6 on Ackerman Island.

  • 6-9 p.m. - Sounds of JuneteenthICT at McAdams Park. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs. Kick back to the musical talents of Injoy Fountain and the Big Homies. Then, be prepared to laugh with comedian KeJuan Moses.

  • 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Carl Brewer BBQ Cookoff BBQ teams that have registered will compete to win a trophy, $500 in a cash prize and the title of “Best Cook.” Tasting at 1 p.m. Award presentation at 3 p.m.
  • 8 a.m. - 2nd Annual Jubilee 2 Mile Walk/Run Learn more and sign up here.
  • 10 a.m. - JuneteenthICT Parade An armband is required to be in the parade. Learn more and sign up here.
  • 10 a.m. - 4 pm JuneenthICT Community Service Day Three blessing boxes will be painted then used to collect donations at 3 locations in Northeast Wichita. To help, contact Antar Gholar at ictrbg@gmail.com.
  • 11 a.m.-3 p.m. - Covid-19 Vaccine Mobile Walk-in Clinic at the McAdams Recreation Center. No appointment necessary.
  • Noon to 5 p.m. - Kids Corner
  • 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Covid-19 Vaccine Mobile Walk-In Clinic at the McAdams Recreation Center. Hosted by the Black Nurses Association & Us Doing Us JuneteenthICT Park Celebration. No appointment necessary. Armband required.
  • 6 p.m. JuneteethICT Festival Concert featuring Oceanview Slim and XV. Plus, a DJ Battle DJ AC & DJ Cadence.
  • Soulfest at the Wave: Featuring Musiq Soulchild and Dave Hollister. Wear your JuneteenthICT t-shirt or wristband to receive free nachos and a soda at the concert.

  • 2-4 p.m. - Father’s Day Celebration. A closed event at The Center.
