WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Crown Uptown Theatre will be closed through the weekend after a small fire interrupted their opening night performance Friday evening.

The Crown Uptown’s general manager and executive director Max Wilson said they just got through the show’s first act when a loud pop was heard.

A short time later, the smell of smoke filled the theatre.

Theatre workers found a small fire in a breaker box in the basement, which they put out with a fire extinguisher.

It’s after lightning hit the building.

The audience was evacuated as they called in the fire department to make sure everything was okay.

Wilson said, “We were so thankful for their understanding during their brief evacuation. It was a lot of standing out in the rain figuring out what was going on, but we made it work.”

Wilson said some of their equipment and lights are not working.

The Crown Uptown said they’ll be reaching out to people who had tickets for this weekend’s shows. Those ticket holders can get a refund or a raincheck for future performance.

No one was hurt.
