Neighbors concerned about possible explosion, fire from illegally-stored fireworks
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - There’s been some commotion on Angel street in South Wichita lately.
“Kept seeing them come in and out, dropping stuff off into the garage,” said Joseph Kallas.
This has neighbors like Kallas wondering what’s going on.
He lives across the street and says he didn’t know what was being unloaded until KWCH told him, but another neighbor, who wants to remain anonymous, knew exactly what it was.
“He just said he was unloading fireworks, and I told him ‘no you’re not’, and he said, ‘yes I am,’” said the neighbor.
In security footage you can see a semi-trailer rolling up.
“There’s enough in there to make a large hole.”
As one neighbor describes it, they unloaded dozens of palettes, stacking up about 5 to 6 feet in the garage.
“How can you be so ignorant of what’s going on, what you’re doing, what you’re unloading, that you don’t realize you are jeopardizing not only your life, but everyone else around you.”
Neighbors say they don’t want to cause any trouble, they just want to feel safe.
Thursday neighbors also shared video of a box truck being loaded back up.
KWCH contacted the fire marshal who told us it’s illegal to store fireworks in residential areas. Fire officials and Wichita Police have contacted the owner, who tells them he’ll get them removed. Officials say the owner has until Friday to do it, or they’ll be taken away and left with a citation and fine.
