WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The last Save A Lot discount grocery store in Wichita is set to close next month, news that comes as a disappointment for people in a northeast Wichita neighborhood who depend on the store as their most accessible option for getting groceries.

Save A Lot issued a statement on the planned closing of its store near 13th and Grove, saying in part, “We take the decision to close any Save A Lot location very seriously and regularly review our stores on a number of factors.”

The grocery chain goes on to say that it is grateful to customers and team members for their loyalty and support.

Save A Lot customer Linda Sims is among people living near the store who are disappointed to hear about the closure.

“It’s very disheartening to me to see the only grocery store, besides Dillons on Hillside, getting ready to close,” she said.

The Save A Lot store at 13th and Grove is part of Wichita Vice Mayor Brandon Johnson’s district. He said the store’s closure is frustrating and disappointing, but he is committed to finding a solution for the community.

“It’s devastating,” Sims said. “It may not be to the ones who are looking from the outside in, but or the people who live in this vicinity. “My neighbor just had heart surgery. Him and his wife are elderly. They walk over (to the store) every day. That’s his exercise. I’m upset about it.”

A statement from Save A Lot said the company decided not to renew its lease and the store will close on July 10.
