Suspect in shooting outside Wesley Medical Center found dead following standoff in W. Wichita
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Update: The Wichita Police Department said that a man suspected of shooting and killing a woman outside Wesley Medical Center on Monday has been found dead inside an apartment building in west Wichita.
Andrew Ford, a spokesperson for the police department, said officers were called to the complex in the 2300 block of N. Somerset shortly before 1 p.m. They believed that Robert Schoenberger, a suspect in the death of Terri Stidham, was holed up inside one of the units.

Officers responded to the location, set up a perimeter and attempted to make contact with Schoenberger. The Wichita Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT also responded to the scene.
Ford said that for several hours, multiple attempts were made to get Schoenberger to come out of the apartment peacefully. When those efforts failed, SWAT deployed chemical munitions inside the apartment.
After yet another failed attempt to get Schoenberger out of the apartment, a drone was deployed inside.
“That drone did locate a male inside of a bathroom with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said Ford.

SWAT operators went inside the apartment. Once they cleared it, the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County were allowed inside.
Schoenberger was pronounced dead at 4:47 p.m.
Ford said Schoenberger and Stidham knew each other and had been married at one time. Stidham’s children set up a GoFundMe account to pay for their mother’s funeral expenses and to care her youngest sibling, who is 15.
“What we can say is this is a tragedy that this young lady lost her life, and we want to get this male into custody to bring some form of justice for her and her family,” said Ford.
12 News found out that Schoenberger had a long rap sheet dating back to the 90s with convictions for arson, theft, burglary and indecent solicitation of a child. He was paroled to Sedgwick County in May 2025, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
While the investigation remains active, Ford said there is no longer a threat to the public.
