Grandfather charged with assisting Salina woman accused in deadly DUI crash

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The grandfather of a Salina woman charged with causing a deadly crash while she was under the influence appeared in a Saline County courtroom on Tuesday.

Dennis Katzenmeier, 78, is charged with obstructing apprehension or prosecution in the case of Kayla Errebo. Katzenmeier was booked into jail at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. He was released on bond about two hours later.

Errebo, 32, is charged with second-degree murder, aggravated battery, violation of duty as a driver, reckless driving, circumvention of an ignition interlock device and improper driving on a laned roadway.

The charges stem from a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed 55-year-old Deanna “June” Sommerfeld on August 8.

The 55-year-old and her husband were driving on K-140 when they were hit head-on by Errebo, who is suspected of driving under the influence. She was not charged with DUI.

In January 2024, Errebo was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs as well as for tampering with an ignition interlock device.

She was arrested again in June 27, 2024, for driving under the influence, fleeing from an officer, driving without a valid license, and operating a vehicle without the required ignition interlock device.

She pleaded guilty to the charges in October 2024 and was sentenced to one year of probation, which was set to end in November 2025.

That probation was revoked during a hearing last week. Errebo is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on August 22.

Katzenmeier is due back in court on August 29. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 7 months to a maximum of 23 months in prison, a fine of up to $100,000 and 12 months post-release supervision.
