German Shepherd beaten, shot protecting teenager in home invasion

SEATTLE, Wash. (KWCH) A two-year-old German Shepherd is being hailed a hero after he risked his life to protect his 16-year-old best friend during a home invasion in Des Moines, Washington

When burglars broke into the home on Wednesday, the teenager hid in a closet with his dog Rex.

Suddenly, Rex ran downstairs to confront the burglars who then beat him until he was bleeding.

According to KIRO, burglars continued to ransack the house after brutally beating Rex.

They would eventually come to the room where the boy was hiding in the closet. With what little strength he had, Rex lunged at the burglars.

He was shot three times.

The burglars fled the scene once they heard police sirens. When officers arrived, they first thought Rex was dead.

Rex was taken to the local vet clinic where doctors were able to stabilize him.

"I just want to thank my dog. If it wasn't for him, I feel like I wouldn't be standing here right now," says Javier Mercado.

A family member set up a GOFUNDME that has already reached it's goal thanks to thousands of donations.
