Topeka Police dog dies

The Topeka Police Department is mourning the loss of "Maverick", a service dog. According to the police department, Maverick ran a training track on Monday and showed no signs of illness. Around fifteen minutes after being placed back in the air conditioned patrol vehicle, he started displaying unusual behavior consistent with a seizure.

Maverick was taken to a vet to be examined. He was kept overnight for observation, after being sedated and stabilized.

Police say Maverick had another seizure at around 9:45 pm, and died.

A necropsy, which is an animal autopsy, will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Police say the police SUV he was in was equipped with a temperature monitoring system so the handler can monitor the temperatures. The system was working correctly, and the interior of the vehicle was between 60 and 65 degrees at the time of the seizure.
