Winter weather blamed in deadly semi crash in Ellsworth County

ELLSWORTH COUNTY, Kan. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the winter storm that arrived in Kansas Friday likely played a factor in a deadly, two-semi crash on K-156 in Elllsworth County.

The KHP says a 41-year-old man from Mexico died in the crash. The driver of the second semi, a 23-year-old man from Jefferson Georgia received minor injuries.

In its description of the crash, the KHP says the first semi was traveling west on K-156 a little more than half of a mile east of the K-156/K-140 junction when it came around the curve and almost jack-knifed into the lane of the second semi, causing the head-on collision.

The KHP reports the crash happened about 5:20 p.m., but the highway remained blocked for a few hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

This marked the second fatal crash of the day where weather is believed to have been a factor. Earlier Friday, one person died in a
