2 arrested in road-rage shooting that left 4-year-old boy critically injured

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) Update: Thursday morning

Wichita police arrested 19-year-old Tylin Atkinson and 21-year-old Ramonyka Smith in connection with a road-rage shooting that left a four-year-old hospitalized with injuries.

Officers were called to 10th & Topeka around 4:55 p.m. for the shooting on Wednesday.

They arrived on the scene and found a blue Chevy Tahoe which had two bullet holes. Inside the SUV were a 23-year-old man, 25-year-old wife, his 26-year-old sister and six children under the age of ten.

A four-year-old boy in the vehicle had been shot in the side and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police say he remains stable.

Through their investigation, officers learned the shooting was result of a road rage incident that started at 29th and Broadway then continued on to 13th and Broadway and ended in the 1200 block of N. Topeka.

Police say there was a disturbance and Atkinson got out of a silver Mustang and fired two shots at the Tahoe, striking the boy. The Mustang then fled.

Officers in the area stopped the Mustang at 9th and Volutsia and found Smith and 19-year-old Trayvon Coleman inside.

Smith and Atkinson, who was located at a residence in the 1100 block of North Hydraulic, were booked into for aggravated battery and unlawful discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

Coleman was arrested and booked into jail for outstanding warrants

The investigation is ongoing and the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.

Update: Wednesday night

Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay identifies the person critically injured in a Wednesday afternoon shooting north of downtown Wichita as a four-year-old child. It happened a little before 5 p.m. near 10th and Topeka.

Ramsay says this was a road-rage incident in which at least two shots were fired into a vehicle. Inside that vehicle were six children under the age of 10, the chief says.

He says the injured child was shot in the stomach.

Wednesday evening, police surrounded a blue Chevy Tahoe involved in the road-rage incident.. Police say it started near 13th and Broadway, involving the Tahoe and a silver Ford Mustang.

Police say one car cut the other off. That's when two shots were fired at the vehicle with six children inside. Police say they believer two adults were with the children in the car.
