SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. Update:
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office has identified the person killed in an early morning car crash west of Wichita as 17-year-old Conner J. Richuber.
The sheriff's office's preliminary investigation indicates Conner's blue 1995 Chevrolet pickup was traveling west on 21st Street North from 167th Street West.
The vehicle crossed over the center line and collided with the eastbound gold 2013 GMC Yukon XL just west of the intersection.
Conner died at the scene. The 55-year-old driver of the Yukon was taken to Via Christi St. Francis in critical condition.
Investigators believe icy road conditions and speed could be contributing factors. The accident is still under investigation.
Eyewitness News confirmed with Goddard Public Schools that Conner was a student at Goddard High School.
The district released the following statement from Principal Doug Birdwell:
“As a school community, we want to extend our thoughts and prayers to Conner Richuber’s family during this difficult time. Our crisis team have been available to support students and staff individually, or in groups, today and throughout the weeks to come.”
One person is dead, another injured in a crash reported a little before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday west of Wichita at 21st Street North and 167th Street West.
Sedgwick County Sheriff's Captain David Mattingly says the crash involved a pickup and a suburban. He says the pickup went left of center.
Mattingly says slick road conditions may have played a factor in the crash, but could not confirm the cause. The investigation into the crash continued hours after it happened. Drivers were advised to avoid the area.
For perspective, this is along 167th Street west approaching Maple. We had to drive on this ice to get to the crash. 21st Street isn’t much better. pic.twitter.com/DD7hl3TsBl— Melissa Murray (@KWCHMMurray) November 13, 2018
