Police identify man shot, killed at NE Wichita apartment complex

Wichita police have identified the man killed in a shooting early Sunday morning as 22-year-old Elbert Costello.

Officers responded to a shooting call at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of N. Woodlawn around 3:20 a.m. They found Costello in the parking with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

A second victim, a 24-year-old man, was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle. He had also been shot multiple times and was hospitalized for serious injuries.

A police investigation revealed there was an exchange of gunfire between two groups of people in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Buildings and vehicles on the grounds were damaged. No other injuries were reported.

Police say this was not a random incident.

One man is dead, and another is seriously hurt after an overnight shooting in northeast Wichita.

Officers were called around 3:20 a.m. for a report of a drive-by shooting at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of N. Woodlawn.

When police arrived, they found a 22-year-old man in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene. A second 24-year-old man was taken by private vehicle to a local hospital with gunshot wounds. He remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Police say the preliminary investigation shows that there was an exchange of gunfire between two groups of people in the parking lot of the complex. There was damage to some of the apartment buildings and vehicles in the parking lot, but no other injuries were reported.

Investigators say the shooting was not a random incident, and it is believed to be gang-related. Anyone with information is asked to call WPD investigations at 268-4407 or they can call an anonymous tip in through Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
