WPD to increase patrol near 13th & Oliver following weekend shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) 11:30 a.m.

The Wichita Police Department is increasing patrol in the area 13th and Oliver following a weekend shooting that left four people hurt.

Officer Charlie Davidson, a spokesman for the department, said police have received little cooperation regarding the shooting which has been classified as gang-related.

He said the shooting occurred around 2 p.m. on Saturday, when two groups exchanged fire in the 1400 block of N. Harding.

Davidson mutlipe homes were struck during the shooting. A 66-year-old woman, a 48-year-old man, an 18-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were all injured during the shooting. They were taken to the hospital for treatment but have since been released.

Davidson said some of the victims were inside their homes when they were hurt. He said some of them were not in gangs.

Davidson released the following statement from Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay regarding the increased patrol:

"The WPD will be increasing patrols in the area, allocating resources, and working with stakeholders to identify those responsible and involved to make sure they are held accountable. A continuation of this violence will not be tolerated. We need people who have information about this incident to work with our investigators. Minimal cooperation so far, has slowed the investigation. The Wichita pOlice Deaprmnet is asking the community for more assistance. Wichita police say four people were wounded in an apparent gang-related shooting in northeast Wichita.

The shooting happened around 2:35 p.m. Saturday near 14th and Harding.

Police say the groups met right off Harding and a shootout started.

Two juveniles and two adults were hurt. They were released from a local hospital Saturday evening.

Officers say 1-50 shots were fired during the shootout. Neighbors in the area said it sounded like fireworks.

"When we came over here and saw all this blocked off. It's devastating and in broad daylight you cant go anywhere and enjoy yourself without something going on," says Clarice Peters.

Police are questioning one person in connection with the shooting. They have not said how many people might be involved or if there are any more suspects.

Investigators didn't say what led up to the shooting.
Multiple people were injured following a shooting in northeast Wichita.

Sedgwick County dispatchers say the shooting happened around 2:35 p.m. Saturday.

Two people were transported to the hospital with injuries, one in critical condition.

Dispatchers say two other shooting victims walked into a local hospital.
