Man arrested in death of Wichita doctor held on $1 million bond

Update 3:45 p.m.

Arrest records with the Sedgwick County Sheriff"s Office show the man arrested for first-degree murder in the death of Dr. Achutha Reddy is held a the Sedgwick County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Records show 21-year-old Umar Dutt was arrested Wednesday night and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail a little before 1 a.m. Thursday on a charge of first-degree murder.


Update 10:45 a.m.

Wichita police have identified a doctor killed near Central and Edgemoor Wednesday night as Dr. Achutha Reddy.

Police say around 7:22 p.m., officers received a call of a cutting at 625 N. Carriage Parkway.

When officers arrived, they located a 57-year-old victim in the alley behind the business with numerous stab wounds.

A short time later, around 7:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to a suspicious character call at the Wichita Country Club, located near 13th & Rock Road.

A security guard there saw a man in a car in the parking with blood on him. Police arrived at the country club and arrested a 21-year-old man for the death of Dr. Reddy.

Lt. Ojile says the man is a client of Dr. Reddy's and had been at his office earlier in the day.

Ojile says the man was in the business short time, he left and then later came back with Dr. Reddy and they went into an office.

Ojile says a disturbance could be heard in the office. An office manager entered the office to find the suspect attacking Dr. Reddy.

She tried to stop the attack which allowed the doctor to flee from the office.

The suspect then chased Dr. Reddy out of the business and into the alley where the second assault occurred.

According to booking sheets, 21-year-old Umar Dutt was arrested Wednesday night and booked into the Sedgwick County jail for first-degree murder.

Update 7:00 a.m.

We now know the name of the man arrested in connection with a Wichita doctor's death.

According to a Sedgwick County bookings report 21-year-old Umar Dutt was arrested Wednesday night for first-degree murder.

The doctor was found stabbed inside the Holistic Psychiatry Clinic near Central & Edgemoor Thursday night.

Wichita police are expected to release more details about the murder at a 10 a.m. briefing.

Update 10 p.m.

Police say the suspect in the fatal stabbing of a doctor in east Wichita is now in custody. We're told the suspect was arrested at the Wichita Country Club near 13th and Rock Road.

Police have not identified the doctor who died from his injuries in the stabbing, but he has been described as a man in his late 50's who worked a the Holistic Psychiatric Services clinic at 625 N. Carriage Parkway, where the stabbing happened.


One person is killed in an east Wichita stabbing reported about 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. Police say the victim in this case is a doctor with the Holistic Psychiatric Services office at 625 N. Carriage Parkway, near Central and Edgemoor.

Sedgwick County dispatch says the victim died from the injuries.

Wichita Police Lt. Drew Seiler says officers responded to a cutting and during the course of the call, found a doctor behind the building with multiple stab wounds.

Police have not identified the doctor nor provided any information on a suspect in this case. They say a man went into the psychiatric services building and made contact with a doctor.

During that contact, "the incident occurred," Seiler says.
