Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Hutchinson

A 55-year-old man is dead after being shot by officers in Hutchinson Tuesday morning. Police identify that man as Richard Jones,of Hutchinson.

Captain Troy Hoover with the Hutchinson Police says officers were dispatched to a "trouble with subject" call at a home in the 3500 block of Ridgewood.

When officers arrived, they entered the home and announced their presence.

At that time, Captain Hoover says they encountered Jones in the bedroom who was armed with a handgun. Hoover says Jones then pointed the gun at officers, prompting those officers to fire their weapons.

Jones died at the scene.

There were no injuries to the officer.

The KBI is investigating the case.

Searching court paperwork, Eyewitness News found a protection from abuse order against a Richard Jones from Hutchinson. The order dates back to August and we found records of more than one violation of that order.

Neighbors say they're just glad for the police presence, but are also shocked by what happened.

Jackie Eckert lives across the street from where the shooting happened. She says the first she knew anything had happened in the home across the street was when her son left for school and saw all the police cars.

"I mean, it's shocking," Eckert says. "You come out to crime-scene tape and all of the police officers and everything. And then, the worst part, you find out that somebody had been killed."
