Elevator cable snaps in Haven, man falls 8 to 10 feet

HAVEN, Kan. (KWCH) A Haven man is in critical condition after he fell 8 to 10 feet in his homemade elevator.

Reno County Fire District Chief Elwin "Curly" Gingerich said 69-year-old Marcus Smith lives on the second floor of a metal building and uses the elevator to take him up and down in his home.

He said Smith must have held the button down for too long and the cable snapped.

He was able to call some family to come over and help.

Smith was taken to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition. He said he was also suffering from back pain.
