The hallways are empty now, but dozens of students just graduated from WSU's nursing program.

Nursing is a job in high demand across Kansas.

“Yep, they're getting them, pretty quickly, we do a straw poll, show of hands how many of them have gotten jobs when we see them around graduation, and I would say 90 percent of ours had their hand up for this graduating class,” said Brandy Jackson, WSU Director of Undergraduate Nursing Programs.

The state career website shows those high demand jobs.

There are 50,000 job vacancies right now.

"There's need for nurses all throughout the state, from there many of the jobs that are needed are regional, different in certain regions, for instance in the Wichita area there's a high need for aviation workers, accountants. Western Kansas there's a high need for teachers,” said Lana Gordon, Kansas Secretary of Labor.

Unemployment is a low 3.4 percent right now in Kansas.

“All of the jobs you see on kscareernav website are the high wage, high demand occupations, so I think you will continue to see wages go up in Kansas," said Diane DeBacker with Department of Commerce.

Meanwhile, WSU is graduating as many nursing students as they can to fill some of those high demand jobs.

"We only can take so many, and we're busting at the seams, and it is a very competitive process, so we can have anywhere from 130 applicants, but we can only take 60 of those,” said Jackson.
