Hutchinson schools report minor earthquake damage

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KWCH) A 4.2 earthquake struck the Hutchinson area Friday morning causing damage to several buildings and residents across town, including in the Hutchinson school district.

Public Information Office Ray Hemmen said staff members made reports of ceiling tiles shaking loose, concrete coming through a ceiling tile in one classroom at a middle school, a building door that won't close, sprinkler covers that fell off the ceiling in one area and cracks in a couple of walls.

Hemmen said it really the damage is minor in scale and not really visible.

He said the earthquake sounded like thunder and was nothing like the earthquakes he experienced before.

Ultimately, he said what really matters is that all students and staff members are safe and classes will carry on as normal.
