Arkansas River closed due to 'dangerous water conditions' from recent flooding
The City of Wichita announced Thursday afternoon that the Arkansas River is closed until further notice. This is due to high flow rates and increased debris from recent flooding, resulting in dangerous water conditions.
The city says it will "let the community know when river activities become safe," and that it is working with the Riverfest, which kicks off Friday (May 31) downtown.
Marybeth Jarvis with Wichita Festivals, Inc. last week indicated event organizers could adjust and the Riverfest's success would not hinge on access to the river.
