WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) The Federal Trade Commission says millions of Americans get their Identity stolen each year.
Eyewitness News wants to help you protect yourself from becoming a victim. That's why we are teaming up with the Better Business Bureau for a free shred event.
"Secure Your ID Day" will take place Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Former Coleman Parking Lot near 2nd and St. Francis in downtown Wichita.
The event is aimed at helping people safely dispose of documents that may contain sensitive information.
Denise Groene with the BBB says people work hard to steal your identity and you need to work hard to protect it.
"The more you can do to protect your information, the better off you'll be. That's going to keep the criminals moving on to the next person. You may be doing everything right, but maybe your neighbor's not. That's an easy target for those criminals. That's where they go - that low-hanging fruit," said Groene.
The BBB is partnering with KWCH, International Paper, the Attorney General's Office, and the Sedgwick County Commission.
"International Paper actually recycles all of the destroyed documents so that it can go into anything such as toilet paper, and other toiletries. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Not only are you protecting your identity, but it's also to create a more green approach," said Groene.
The BBB says identity thieves need your address, birthday, and social security number to open accounts under your name. Any documents with that information should be destroyed. For a list of how long you should keep certain documents, click here.
