Man charged in crash that critically injured woman on bicycle
The 34-year-old driver of the minivan that struck a 24-year-old Wichita woman on a bicycle last month is charged in Sedgwick County District Court with aggravated battery while driving under the influence.
Prosecutors say Larry Gaines was intoxicated when his minivan hit Carmella James May 22 in Derby, critically injuring her. James, a local mixed martial arts fighter, remains hospitalized, now in serious condition.
Gaines next court appearance is set for June 28. Bond was set at $100,000.
UPDATE: Wichita police have arrested the driver of the minivan they say struck a 24-year-old woman who was riding a bike south of Wichita this morning.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office says the 34-year-old Larry Gaines was arrested and booked for DUI.
According to online booking records, Gaines is being held on the arresting charges of aggravated battery; DUI causing great bodily harm/disfigurement and DUI 4th or more.
Derby police say they arrested Gaines earlier this month for DUI. Records show he went to jail for two days and had a year of probation for DUI in 2005. In 2007, he pleaded guilty for fleeing or attempting to elude an officer.
UPDATE (7:30 a.m.):
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office says 24-year-old woman is in critical condition after being struck by a van while riding a bike early Tuesday morning south of Wichita.
Sgt Michael Littleton says the van was going south on Rock Road when it struck the bike. There may be a second vehicle involved.
No one else was hurt.
Authorities are looking into the possibility of charges against the driver.

Emergency crews are on the scene of an accident involving a vehicle and a bicycle north of Derby.
Crews were called to 55th Street South and Rock Road shortly after 5:00 Tuesday morning. One person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
A deputy at the scene tells Melissa Murray that Rock Road was closed at 47th as they work at the scene. It was re-opened at around 7:00 a.m..
