May is National Bike Month and the perfect time to celebrate Wichita’s increasingly bike-friendly culture.

The community will be gathering Friday around 12:15 p.m. at the Old Town Farmers Market to celebrate Bike to Work Day and the second successful year of the Bike Share ICT program in Wichita.

Two years ago, Wichita announced Bike Share ICT, a program of Health ICT and the Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita, funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas and the Knight Foundation Fund through the Wichita Community Foundation.

Now, Bike Share ICT has more than 40 bike stations across all corners of the city with 220 bikes available to ride. This year alone, Bike Share has reached over 26,000 rides.

“We are thrilled with the huge success of Bike Share ICT over the past two years,” said Becky Tuttle, Wichita City Council Member. “Thanks to the generous donations of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, this program has doubled the number of bikes as well as more than doubled the number of riders in its second year. This program provides a healthy, affordable transportation option for many of our community members as well as a fun leisure option for our visitors.”

The event will include bike to work breakfast stations, bike to work lunch, free Bike Share ICT rides and half- price memberships. For more information on events and times, visit
