HUTCHINSON, Kan. The Hutchinson Fire Department Friday morning contained a fire to a building on the Westar Energy property in the 3200 block of East 30th, in Hutchinson.

The fire department says responding crews saw a large column of black smoke as they approached the scene. The source of that smoke was fire inside the old power generating tower being demolished on the property.

"A demolition recycling crew was working with a cutting torch when insulation and roofing materials caught on fire," the Hutch FD says. "With the strong north wind, the fire spread quickly."

Utilizing two aerial streams, the fire department says crews quickly had the fire under control, and "fire crews with the help of the demolition crew, were able to move items to finish extinguishing the fire.

Reno County EMS and Kansas Gas Services assisted the Hutchinson Fire Department at the scene. There were no reports of injuries.
