Crews respond to runaway airplane in Moundridge

MOUNDRIDGE,Kan. Emergency crews are calling it a runaway plane. Moundridge crews got a call Tuesday afternoon telling them a plane was on the loose.

911: "It's just driving around?"
Caller: " Yeah it's just driving in circles."

Jeremy Johnson works for the city's volunteer fire department.

"Stunned, didn't know what to think, I thought it was a joke at first."

No joke.

"I guess I was one of the lucky ones that got to respond haha."

Johnson and about twenty other people responded to the call of a single engine, fixed wing airplane that was driving around without anyone inside.

"From what I understand, it's a plane you start from the outside and you turn the prop to get it started and you are not actually in the plane."

He says when crews got there they tried to come up with a plan to stop it, but it was difficult to get close to the plane. Johnson says crews were worried as it got closer to cars traveling on a county road and I-135. There are also several hangars nearby.

"There is no real plan, I guess we just came up with several options that might work and were prepared to use those."

He says it ran out of gas before it could cause any injuries or damage... but it did cause a pretty good laugh.

"You know, it's just something you don't train for, so maybe we will do that now haha."
