WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) Wichita police are investigating after a fetus was found in a box along the Arkansas River.
(Fetus found near Greenway and Skinner in south Wichita)
Officers responded to a 911 call near Greenway and Skinner on Sunday before 5 p.m. A 57-year-old woman said she found a box on a sandbar in the Arkansas River.
Officers open the box and found bloody materials and a fetus inside. They presumed it to be 10 weeks gestation or younger.
The fetus was taken to the Sedgwick County Coroner's Office where the exact age will be determined.
At that time, police have not classified the case as a criminal investigation. Still, it's a discovery neighbors like Rowona describe as "very shocking and heartbreaking."
"It's just shocking (because) this neighborhood is such a quiet neighborhood, and to hear something like that, it upsets me. It really does," Rowona says.
Rowona says the heartbreak is for the young life cut short and for the person who had the fetus before it was found on the sandbar.
"We do not believe it will be criminal, but we're going to wait till the coroner provides us with their report and, of course, talk to the district attorney's office once we gather all the information," Wichita Police Capt. Brent Allred says.
While details about what happened remain unclear, Rowona says she hopes women know they don't have to face their pregnancy alone.
"Hopefully, nothing like this every happens again and to let people know that there are places that can help," she says.
