Google+ to shut down after security bug

(CNN) The Google Plus Social Network never really took off and now, it's being shut down.

Google launched the platform in 2011 to try and rival Facebook, but it wasn't popular among users.

Couple that with a security bug that affected service and Google determined it was time to say goodbye.

The company is taking heat for not disclosing the security problem to the public.

About 500 thousand accounts could have been affected in may, but google says no evidence was found that information was misused.

No word on when exactly google plus will be officially shut down.
