A few dozen people gathered in the heat Wednesday for the groundbreaking of a new community center at McConnell Air Force Base.

Standing under the shade of an event tent, a few people spoke about the importance of the new community center that will be built in the on-base housing area.

It will have an 8,000 square foot building with gathering areas and activity rooms. There will also be tennis courts, beach volleyball courts and a pool.

"When our service airmen deploy, they're going to have a place where their families can come and congregate, share like stories, be able to talk to each other and help themselves through the deployment," said Jim Champagne, Business Manager for Corvias.

Run by the private company Corvias, this will be the first time the 1,000 plus airmen and their families who live on base, will have access to amenities like that.

Crews already started to prepare the land for construction. The plan is to get this done in the spring, just in time for Memorial Day.
