A fire destroys a home in southwest Wichita.

Firefighters were called to the 1700 block of South Edwards around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived on scene, crews noticed heavy smoke coming from the home.

Battalion Chief Sid Newby said the home was vacant and no one was inside. Newby said the firefighters' main concern was protecting the homes around the vacant house.

"There was a major collapse so we went defensive pretty quickly and held the fire to the house of origin."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There is no word on damage estimates at this time.
