How to prepare your vehicle for the cold

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) This may be the last morning for months you will not need a jacket when you walk outside.

You'll want to prep your car for the winter. There are quite a few things that are good to have in your trunk.

You should always make sure you have items likes a flashlight, jumper cables and a first aid kit on hand.

Triple-A says some important things to have for winter are warm clothes, a blanket, gloves, scarves, and a hat.

"A lot of the things in a winter kit, we naturally have around the house. A blanket, some extra warm clothes, a toolkit. Start assembling those. You can get a plastic bin or tub and keep those in your trunk or your cargo area in your vehicle," says Triple-A spokesperson Shawn Steward.

Another good thing to grab is kitty litter, sand or snowmelt.

Pour some behind your tires and this will help with traction if your car gets stuck on snow or ice.

You'll of course want to make sure you have an ice scraper with a brush and even a shovel for snow. You can buy one that's collapsible and fits more easily in your car.

Another thing to do is to check your tire pressure.

For less than ten dollars you can get an electronic gauge at Walmart.

This is important for winter because the cold weather can cause your tire pressure to drop. While in summer, the pressure will increase due to warm weather.

When you are checking your tire pressure, you can check the tread on tires.

You'll need that traction when the roads get icy.

If you've noticed your windshield wipers aren't working great, replace those too.

Once the snow and sleet start to fall, you'll need to make sure your windshield is clear.

Your car battery may need to be charged too.

"Batteries, you should definitely check that at least once a year. Usually, batteries are going to last two to three years but if you're running in extreme conditions, sometimes those can be tapped throughout the summer so when winter comes, you may not know it, but your battery may not be charging properly," says Steward.

Triple-A recommends taking your car in for a full inspection now. That way you can check to make sure everything is in working condition before the weather becomes too bad.
