Reno County car-theft suspect arrested after brief standoff in Butler County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. The Reno County Sheriff's Office says John Smalling was arrested Tuesday night after a short standoff in Butler County.

Earlier Tuesday evening, Eyewitness News reported on a standoff southwest of El Dorado in which we're told one a man was barricaded with a weapon prior to his arrest. We know no one was injured in this standoff, but have not confirmed if this is the incident in which officers arrested Smalling.


The Hutchinson Police Department seeks information in its search for a man suspected in multiple auto burglaries, vehicle thefts and high-seed chases.

John David Smalling, 27, has a warrant for his arrest through the Reno County Sheriff's Office. Police say he's been tied to crimes in Haven, Hutchinson, Inman, McPherson, Medora and Wichita.

He's described as standing about 6'3 and weighing about 186 pounds. Hutch police say Smalling has brown eyes, brown hair and a large tattoo on the right side of his neck that reads "Madi."
