FBI: Hutchinson man shot in altercation with federal officer

The FBI says last week's shooting of a Kansas man on his way to a spiritual retreat in Arizona occurred during an altercation with a federal officer following a traffic accident.

The FBI's Phoenix office said Monday that a U.S. Forest Service officer stopped to help Friday after Tyler Miller was in a traffic accident on U.S. 89A in Oak Creek Canyon about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Phoenix.

The agency says the officer was also wounded in a subsequent altercation. Miller was taken to a medical center, where he died.

Family attorney Matt Bretz says the 51-year-old Miller, from Hutchinson, apparently lost control of his pickup truck on a mountain road in Coconino National Forest.

The FBI has not told The Associated Press if Miller was armed. Bretz says the agency told him Miller was unarmed.

A Hutchinson man was fatally shot by a federal officer in Arizona.

The family's attorney told Eyewitness News 51-year-old Tyler Miller was on his way to a spiritual retreat when he was killed.

FBI investigators say Miller was driving on a curvy mountain road when he lost control of his pickup truck. He then went off the road where his vehicle hit a large rock.

Authorities do not know what happened next, except that after he got out of his crashed vehicle a U.S. Forest Service officer shot Ty near the scene of the accident.

The FBI has stated that Miller was not armed.

A full investigation is being conducted by the FBI. The family attorney, Matt Bretz says investigators will likely turn the case over to the US Attorney’s Office to determine what, if any, charges will be filed against the U.S. Forest Service officer.

The family is not prepared to make a statement at this time, as they continue to reel from the shock of this incredible and unimaginable loss. Ty was a much-loved husband and father and an important part of the Hutchinson community. He and his smile will be deeply missed," says Bretz.

The FBI is investigating a federal officer-involved shooting off a highway north of Sedona.

The FBI says 51-year-old Tyler Miller was injured and later died at a hospital. The officer's name was not released, he suffered no injuries.

According to the office of the Kansas Secretary of State, Miller is the owner of TNT Bonding in Hutchinson. The family's attorney, Matt Bretz, says Miller is a well-respected entrepreneur from Hutchinson.

Bretz says that the news is very shocking and the community is mourning. He also says the family is waiting to hear more information regarding what happened.

A Forest Service law enforcement officer who was involved in the shooting was not injured.

The FBI says Miller was involved in a wreck earlier that evening.

No others subjects are being sought in this case.

This investigation is being worked in cooperation with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, DPS, and Sedona Police Department.
