Pratt man shot by officer remains in critical condition

PRATT, Kan. (KWCH) 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018
A man remains in critical condition at a Wichita hospital after a police officer shot him in Pratt Tuesday afternoon.

U.S. 281, which turns in to Pratt's Main Street, reopened Wednesday afternoon.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says when officers responded to a home in Pratt, 38-year-old Rene Prieto waved a gun and fired shots at officers.

Three officers returned fire at Prieto. No officers were injured.

Wednesday morning, Eyewitness News spoke with Prieto's neighbors who say they're shocked by what happened. They say they don't understand why Prieto was outside waving a gun Tuesday afternoon.

"He's a family man. I just don't understand what happened," neighbor Sarah Ibarra says.

Ibarra says she was heading to work Tuesday a little before 4 p.m. when she saw police across the street. She realized the officers were at Prieto's home, but couldn't tell what happened.

"I just don't understand what happened. I don't want to think the worst," she says. "I don't want to listen to social media, but the information we're getting is very hard to take in because that's not the picture I have of (Prieto.)"

Neighbors say Prieto and his family are known to be calm and involved in church. From what she's experienced with the family, one neighbor describes Prieto as "an awesome dad."

The Kansas Department of Transportation says passenger cars and conventional semis can follow a marked detour using local streets.

Superloads and oversized loads will have to be approved for alternate routes as the detour cannot accommodate these loads.
