A Kansas Trooper is recognized nationally for his heroism.
Trooper Raul Carrillo of Derby was awarded the Carnegie Hero Medal, Monday.
Carrillo was off-duty in February 2018 when he responded to an crash in El Dorado. A semi hauling 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel overturned and caught fire.
The driver was pinned inside.
Despite the spreading flames, Carrillo entered the cab through the windshield and freed the man.
Carrillo and the driver were both burned, but survived.
The Carnegie Medal is given throughout the United States and Canada to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others.
