A Kansas City, Kansas dog found his forever home after spending five years in a shelter.

On Wednesday (March 4), the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City threw Merrick a giant send-off as his new owner, Jordan Nassbaum, came to pick him up.

"It breaks my heart that he sat there, but I think that it was destined that he wait there that long until I was ready for another dog," said Nassbaum.

The push to get Merrick adopted was an international one. Animal advocates spent hours marketing the pup on social media and even bought a billboard.

"We were telling the same story to the same audience for those five and a half years and that's when Mission Driven got the billboard we reached a whole new audience," said Scott Poore.

The Humane Society was hoping Merrick’s billboard would get Merrick adopted- and it did.
