Man arrested in connection to deadly shooting near Great Bend

BARTON COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection to a deadly shooting in Barton County.

Nicholas Pethel of rural Great Bend was booked into the Barton County Jail on murder charges and is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond.

Barton County deputies responded around 8:36 p.m. Tuesday to a home west of Great Bend near the airport for a disturbance and reported shots fired call.

When deputies and members of the Kansas Highway Patrol arrived, they found a 34-year-old man dead at the rear of the building. The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Wednesday afternoon, the Barton County Sheriff's Office identifies that man as Charles Rousey, of Great Bend.

Deputies were able to develop suspect information from witnesses and an “attempt to locate” was broadcast.

Members of the Great Bend Fire Department who were returning from an accident scene, had heard the broadcast and spotted the vehicle on S. Main St. in Great Bend. The fire department notified 911 dispatchers who in turn sent law enforcement to the area.

The vehicle was stopped on Railroad Avenue between Washington St. and Main Street. Pethel was taken into custody without incident.
