Wichita man charged with first-degree murder in infant's death

A man accused in the death of a 9-month-old girl faces a charge of first-degree murder. Brietan Rader heard the formal charges against him Friday in Sedgwick County District Court.

He's also charged with two counts of child abuse, cultivation of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia to distribute or manufacture.

The Wichita Police Department says a 9-month-old girl identified as a victim of child abuse died from her injuries.

With infant Maela Flores' death, police say 25-year-old Brietan Rader now is charged with first-degree murder.

Police previously arrested Rader for child abuse, child endangerment, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, cultivation of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

At about 11:20 p.m. Friday (Jan. 10), police responded to assist the Wichita Fire Department on a call at a home in the 3600 block of West 13th Street regarding the report of a child not breathing.

"Upon arrival, officers located Flores with critical injuries," police say. "She was taken to an area hospital for medical treatment, and she succumbed to her injuries (Wednesday).

The investigation revealed the infant suffered the critical injuries while in Rader's care. Police say two children, aged 6 and 2, were not injured, but were taken from the home into police protective custody.

"Additionally, during the investigation, officers discovered a marijuana grow operation inside the apartment," police say.

The investigation is ongoing and, police say, the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.

Making a first appearance in Segwick County District Court Tuesday, a judge charges 25-year-old Brietan Rader with two counts of child abuse. The charges come after his arrest Friday after police found a nine-month-old girl with critical injuries at a northwest Wichita apartment complex.

Rader also faces drug charges.

Police arrested a man on child abuse and drug charges Friday after a baby was critically injured in northwest Wichita.

Police say around 11:20 p.m., officers, along with Fire and EMS, responded to the call of a child not breathing at an apartment complex in the 3600 block of W. 13th St. N.

They arrived to find a nine-month-old girl with critical injuries. The baby girl was taken to the hospital to receive medical treatment, and she remains there.

Through their investigation, police learned the baby was in the care of 25-year-old Brietan Rader at the time. He was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on charges of child abuse, child endangerment, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, cultivation of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Officers also discovered a marijuana grow operation inside the apartment during their investigation.

Police say two boys in the home, ages six and two, were also placed in police protective custody.

Investigators say the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
