WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) McConnell Air Force Base officials ordered the evacuation of 13 aircraft as a precaution due to the possibility of severe weather impacting the Wichita area.
The aircraft were flown to Fairchild AFB, Washington. Fairchild AFB, a “safe haven” base from the storm. McConnell says the base was chosen due to its ability to house displaced McConnell personnel and provide maintenance for McConnell’s aircraft.
McConnell AFB personnel are not being evacuated.
McConnell AFB became the first home of the KC-64 A refueling tankers in January. The base is also the home of the Air Mobility Command's 22d Air Refueling Wing (22 ARW), Air Force Reserve Command's 931st Air Refueling Wing (931 ARW), and the Kansas Air National Guard's 184th Intelligence Wing (184 IW).
Storm Team 12 Chief Meteorologist Ross Janssen says the chances of for large hail and strong winds will increase after 4 or 5 p.m. The threat for tornadoes is low but 1-2" hail and some 60-70 mph winds are possible. The highest severe chances will likely be east of a Dodge City to Great Bend-Manhattan line.
