MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Police in Manhattan confirm they have located the mother of a baby found near Manhattan Ave. and Kimball Ave.
Riley County Police Dept. spokesperson Hali Rowland said the child was found around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Authorities believe the child was abandoned under the Safe Haven Law, which decriminalizes the leaving of unharmed infants with private persons in order for the child to become a ward of the state.
Police would not say whether the child was found inside a residence, or at some other location. They also declined to provide further details about the child's gender or approximate age.
"At this time there is limited information I can release to not compromise the investigation," Rowland told 13 NEWS.
RCPD said the child was taken to Stormont Vail in Topeka as a precaution.
Rowland said the investigation is ongoing.
