NEWTON, Kan. The Newton City Commission Tuesday approved an ordinance legalizing Sunday liquor sales in the city.
The ordinance clearing the Sunday sales passed 4-1 with Mayor Kathy Valentine the lone opposition. The ordinance also legalizes sales on certain holidays, the city says.
Sunday liquor sales in Newton will start in September if there aren't any protests. If a protest petition is filed, it requires 375 signatures to bring the ordinance to voters to make the final decision on Sunday liquor sales.
If there is no petition, the ordinance can move forward without another vote.
