WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) You may have seen a story appear in your Facebook feed saying Wichita police thwarted a mass shooting at the Towne West Mall, but we're here to tell you it never happened.
After receiving several requests from viewers asking if the story was true, Eyewitness News reached out to the Wichita Police Department who says it is indeed - false.
The "news" article comes from a site called "City News" and is written by a "Local Correspondent." It states that WPD stopped a 32-year-old man by the name of "Scott Mason" and "retrieved two loaded assault rifles from the suspect and currently in custody to assist with investigation."
The article also states the information was released during a press conference. But it includes no time or date of when any of this happened.
Again, Wichita police held no such press conference about this fictitious event. So, if you see this story floating in your feed, call it what it is "fake news."
