WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) The north part of I-235 closes entirely, starting Friday night and potentially lasting through the weekend. Crews will demolish the old Seneca Street bridge over the highway.
The closure is between North Meridian and the north junction of Interstate 135.
The Kansas Department of Transportation's recommended detour takes traffic to Kellogg. If you're coming from the east, you'll need to detour south on I-135 to Kellogg, then west to I-235. If you're coming from the west, you'll need to go south on I-235 to Kellogg and then east to I-135.
The suggested tour has the advantage of highway speeds but takes about 17 miles and 15 minutes to complete in very light to mild traffic. takes about 15 minutes.
Eyewitness News anchor Alex Flippin traveled the area and found two routes that will get you around the construction about five minutes faster.
The first route starts at 25th Street and I-235, just south of the planned construction. You'll take 25th Street east to Arkansas then to 37th Street. From there, head west to Hydraulic and avoid all of the construction. The total time of the route? Just over ten minutes.
The second route starts out at I-135 and Hydraulic. Take I-135 south to the 21st Street exit, then head west back to Arkansas, then take a right and travel north back to 25th Street. This trip took about 10 minutes and 28 seconds.
They are just two more options you can use to detour the detour ahead of your weekend.
