WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH/CBS NEWS) It's been an expensive summer for drivers. Gas prices climbed to a four year high but those prices will plummet after Labor Day weekend.
For those planning on traveling this holiday, the average price of gas in Kansas for one gallon of regular gas is $2.66. Its about $2.57 in Wichita which is up more than 30 cents compared to this time last year.
A spokesperson for AAA says relief is on the on the way.
"The good news for consumers is gas prices are going to be cheaper this fall. Typically in the fall we do see gas prices drop that's because we see demand going down, people are done taking their summer road trips."
Also, refineries are able to switch to a winter blend in September which is cheaper to produce. In a new report, AAA predicts those factors will help push prices down about 13 cents a gallon in the coming weeks.
An online tool is available on the Department of Energy's website for those wanting to travel Labor Day weekend. The Fuel Economy Trip Calculator figures out the budget for a road trip.
