The campaign treasurer for Independent Kansas governor candidate Greg Orman announced Tuesday he's resigning from the campaign, effective immediately.

Former Republican state senator Tim Owens issued a statement saying he resigned from the treasurer position with Orman's campaign and is putting his support behind Democrat Laura Kelly.

"It is time to unite behind Senator Laura Kelly and stop Kris Kobach," Owens says. "I've been a friend and colleague to Greg Orman for several years. I supported his run for Senate in 2014 and I until (Tuesday) supported his run for governor. However, this is a critical election for Kansas. We cannot risk the future of our state. This decision is very difficult for me, but I have to put Kansas first."

Owens says he worked closely with Kelly in the Senate. He says she "is the only viable candidate for governor who can win and bring people together -- regardless of political party -- to move our state forward."

Orman responded, saying his wishes Owens well, but reiterating why he's staying in the race where

"Tim believes that the best path forward is with an establishment candidate like Laura Kelly. I wish Tim well, but have told him that my campaign is about the people of Kansas, not about establishment figures in Topeka," Orman says. "As I've said since day one, I am committed to the tens-of-thousands of voters who support me and who are sick and tired of the status-quo."
