NEWTON, Kan. (KWCH) A church in Newton is hosting one of six statues of the Virgin Mary that was blessed by Pope Francis.
It originated in Fatima, Portugal. It was then blessed by the pope last year in Rome.
It has been commissioned by the Catholic church to fly to six continents around the world in 2017 for a centennial celebration of her blessing at Fatima.
"We've been traveling all around the southeast coast. In May, we touched down in Blessed Sacrament in Hollywood, and we've been pretty much all over and yet the mission is still ongoing. So, before this, she was in North Dakota, after she'll go to Alabama for Christmas and then, in January, she'll start another pilgrimage of those states she hasn't yet been," said Sister Clara Kelly.
Extra security is on hand to make sure the statue stays safe. It will be at Our Lady of Lourdes in Pittsburg on Dec. 11 and 12 before departing Kansas.
