A pilot is dead following a small plane crash near Hays.

Trooper Tod Hileman with the Kansas Highway Patrol says the bi-wing 1984 spray plane went down Tuesday morning near the intersection of 240th Avenue and Smoky Hill River Road.

The pilot, 70-year-old John Werth, took off from his private runway around 9:15 a.m. The plane crashed a short time later.

Hileman said Werth lives near Shoenchen and did have chemicals on board.

The Ellis County Fire Department was called out to the scene.

The FAA will take over the investigation.
